Yukon Aikido – Spreading the Peace
Bryan Green, 3rd Kyu, has been sharing his passion for Aikido with Yukoners since January of 2009.
Bryan has been training in the St. Elias Community School Gym, using mats acquired by Richard Clark, who taught Judo in Haines Junction and who now attends Bryan’s classes. Callum’s mom is working to find a dojo space in town, and classes will resume in the Fall.
Kids classes are very well attended, with 4-8 students per class, ages 5-10 years.
Adult classes are held once or twice a week, with 2 students in regular attendance.
Bryan’s most avid student is Callum Cowie-Weir, age 5, whose effort and discipline is worth recognition.
Bryan hopes to begin fundraising for a trip to Japan for the summer of 2010 where he will pursue intensive training and testing.
Visit of the Emperor and Empress of Japan

Emperor Akihito visits VJLS
The members of the Sokushinkan Dojo, which is located in the Vancouver Japanese Language School, were honoured to be invited to take part in the visit of the Emperor and Empress of Japan on Sunday July 12, 2009, to the VJLS. Outside the School, Chris and Jamie (from Sowakan Dojo of Maple Ridge), dressed in dogi and hakama, were part of the crowd lining the sidewalks. Inside, in the Japanese Hall, also dressed in dogi and hakama, Greg had the privilege of being part of a group of instructors representing the VJLS Cultural Activities partners, and more specifically representing Yoshinkan Aikido and Keith Taylor, Sixth Dan dojocho of Sokushinkan Dojo. Greg had a brief moment, as did everyone on the welcoming committee (over 50 people) to speak briefly with both the Emperor and Empress.
Our thanks to the visit organizers, especially Laura, of the VJLS.
Found Objects: Ando Sensei
Found a nice video of Ando Sensei teaching katate mochi shihonage osae ichi
(wrist grasp all direction pin number one)
It is in japanese, but pay close attention to how he pushes forward with his whole body, and how much care he puts into the arm position.
Notice any differences or similiarities to how we teach/train in the technique?

Weekly Technique Posting
After class on Saturday Chris, Jamie, Taylor Sensei and I had an impromptu club meeting over lunch at the new Shinobi Sushi restaurant on 224th, very good btw, during which an idea was floated about posting the weeks techniques on the blog to give everyone an idea of what we would be doing ahead of schedule and also as a method of keeping track of techniques performed for future reference. During Parker Shihans ‘06 Seminar he put myself and Greg in contact with Ashley Hennessey Sensei from London, Ontario. Hennessey Sensei has drafted a 6 month outline that we think would be a would be a very good starting point for the Advanced portion of Tuesdays class with Taylor Sensei’s input at the Thursday class.
For the week of Feb 2/09 the following techniques will be performed in class.
Advanced Techniques
Hanmi handachi katate mochi shihonage 1/2
Shomen uchi shihonage
Yokomen uchi shihonage 1/2
Please note this is an excerpt with acknowledgement to Ashley Hennessey Sensei.
