Thanks to everyone for a great turnout for a wednesday night. I it’s pretty laid back there, but the more people we can get out to our classes the better off the new place will be. It’s also quite nice to train there because of the high ceilings.

Class Notes: Wednesday Class

Kihon dosa renzuku waza (w bokken)

Jo tandoku dai ichi
Gyaku-tsuki magiake

First class back after a little break. For now at least we are back on with a basics and weapons class. The new space is quite inspiring. I am very much looking forward to having real classes in there. Still allot to get done, but it feels like there is major progress.

Weekly Technique Posting

After class on Saturday Chris, Jamie, Taylor Sensei and I had an impromptu club meeting over lunch at the new Shinobi Sushi restaurant on 224th, very good btw, during which an idea was floated about posting the weeks techniques on the blog to give everyone an idea of what we would be doing ahead of schedule and also as a method of keeping track of techniques performed for future reference. During Parker Shihans ‘06 Seminar he put myself and Greg in contact with Ashley Hennessey Sensei from London, Ontario. Hennessey Sensei has drafted a 6 month outline that we think would be a would beĀ  a very good starting point for the Advanced portion of Tuesdays class with Taylor Sensei’s input at the Thursday class.

For the week of Feb 2/09 the following techniques will be performed in class.

Advanced Techniques

Hanmi handachi katate mochi shihonage 1/2
Shomen uchi shihonage
Yokomen uchi shihonage 1/2

Please note this is an excerpt with acknowledgement to Ashley Hennessey Sensei.

Junior Techniques done Tues Feb 3rd:

Mune Mochi Irimizuki

Mune Mochi Kotegaeshi

First Post – Adult Class: Thursday October 9, 2008

Welcome to my first post. I feel it important to contribute as we all get to share in our knowledge via thoughts transcribed. History tell us that important lesson of the written word as it implies to empowerment.

Regarding this class Sensei Taylor had Jarod and I (Alan) in front of the class working through various Katamochi Iriminage and Shomen Uchi Iriminage da iche and Ni. After running through the techniques he had the class critique our movement. I always find this enjoyable to see who notices what.

Sensei Taylor asked Jarod to perform the first movement = Shomen Uchi, then proceeded to ask him what was in his centre. Next movement towards iriminage, same question; What is in your centre? After some frustration on Shite’s part leading to Jarod replying -1) My Hip 2) My Elbow… The correct answer was in fact his left hand. Shite had struck down with his left hand leading from left side Kamae. As he struck down his left hand was in his centre. As he moved forward to gain momentum towards Iriminage. the left hand was leading the entire way.

This was a real eye opener for me as I believe this is the first time we had heard it expressed quite like this. I also have to confess Jarod’s frustration added to the moment by enhancing the effect Sensei Taylor’s question was having on Shite.

As Uke – being involved – directly has had a impact on me I will never forget. To understand that there has to be that pivotal key in my centre the entire time was an epiphany. Of course what is in Shite’s centre will change depending on the technique, however knowing that for the techniques to work with much less effort.

Sowakan: Saturday Class

Today we had Jamie and Henry working on yudan weapons techniques

Kyu levels worked on happogiri, and osae tsuki.

Dan levels worked on renzoku de-osae gakyu kote.

The kids class was fun, with plenty of extra instructors to help out. We gave out several belts, and now have a bevy of new brown belts in the kids class. Congratulations Ashley, Abbey, Solita, and Samuel.

Sowakan: Tuesday Class

We got a visit from sifu taylor tonight. This was a happy surprise for all of us! We focused on movement, and some flowing sinewali practice. Then we moved into the play of enter, pass, blend with open hand and with weapon.

I found some of the cuts quite challenging, especially at first. The stick would be moving nicely, then my brain would get caught up on the angle of attack, or how i was holding it, and stop dead. After a bit of practice it started to flow a bit better. I also found at certain times the attacks on shite were more with the hand, than with the stick. That might have been due to shite entering in properly. I’m not quite sure, will have to practice a bit.

We also did some pushing/lance practice that was quite interesting. It is quite amazing the amount of power you can generate with the lance, considering you aren’t moving forward all that much at all.

It was quite a large class for us. This always adds to the great energy.

Thanks sifu taylor!
